The Insta-Crowd, China

"Stand up," someone prodded me.

There were dozens of people packed into the room,

and those in the back wanted to see me, too.

"Waiguo ren, waiguo ren ("Foreign person, foreign person")," I heard the explanation being yelled to the dozens of people in the street who couldn't squeeze inside.

I looked at them looking at me, and I wondered what they saw. Did a child ever decide because of me to study English, to bicycle around the world, or across China?

I wanted to think so. I hoped that just as I was taking something with me when I left, I might also be leaving something behind.
